Youth work has tradition The work with adolescents is one of the SV association’s traditions and is the basis for a successful future. The adolescent dog handlers who are now a familiar sight at events of the association are proof of this. In order to offer our adolescents a fitting platform, we initiate supra-regional events, such as the Youth and Junior Championships of the federal groups and the SV’s German Youth and Junior Championship . Furthermore, the junior interests and the youth work are represented within the managing board by the association’s head of youth. Come and see the SV’s youth work for yourself. The dog as friend and partner Life as active member of the SV is characterized by community, tolerance and responsibility – all of these are important experiences for young people. The dogs make this possible. Keeping an animal requires discipline, including regularity in the daily routine,- even on days when it might be inconvenient or difficult. In this way, the capacity to recognize the dog as the friend and partner for whom one assumes responsibility is developed step by step. Furthermore, there are the positive experiences in the community: at championships, the huge enthusiasm for the hobby brings people together. In addition, the performance during training and the successes at events build the adolescent’s self-confidence and the faith in their own capabilities. The SV’s youth work is supported by the many activities of the federal and local groups: excursions, tent camps and competitions with subsequent festive eventing. What does “all-round talent German Shepherd“ (decathlete) mean? What kind of work can a German Shepherd do? Because of its multitude of talents, the German Shepherd is suitable for “almost” every dog sport and free-time activity. He is very willing to learn and to work, wants to be stimulated. There are many interesting training fields the dog owners can specialize in with their German Shepherd, such as for example tracking work, agility, rescue dog sport, obedience and protection work. Visit a SV local group in your area. With like-minded persons, a hobby is twice as much fun!

What significance does the German Shepherd have as service dog? Who does not recognize the police officer with the “four-legged colleague” at his side? The training of German Shepherds has a long tradition and still has a high significance for the authorities owning service dogs. Popular because of their versatility, willingness to work, toughness and endurance, many German Shepherds provide their service at police or customs all over Germany. The dog is usually acquired at the age of 1 – 2 years. Normally, the police carry out dual training, meaning: the basis is the protection dog training, followed by a subsequent specialized dog training (for example as human remains detection dog). During buying, special emphasis is put on the dogs being able to fulfill the requirements of this demanding training. Customs train many specialist tracking dogs, such as for example explosives detection dogs, cash detection dogs, mantrailing dogs. Also in the service for the human is the German Shepherd in the areas of therapy and guide dogs, as rescue dog for emergency response organizations for the searching of missed persons beneath rubble and avalanches. Not to forget one of the German Shepherd’s most original „services“: shepherding sheep as reliable companion and helper of the shepherd!

What kind of inbreeding is permitted in the SV? At the moment, the tightest permitted inbreedings are 2-3 or 3-2, i. e. the paired animals have common ancestors in the 2. and 3. generation. However, in the future, the inbreedings shall be limited to maximally 3-3 inbreedings, as with „tighter“ inbreedings, the bad characteristics often predominate. Additionally, the bloodlines should not be restricted further. The committee has looked into the matter of inbreeding again during their meeting on April 17th 2015. Since 1/1/2015, according to the breeding rules, an inbreeding that is closer than 3-3 is not permitted anymore. After scientific advice and the latest findings about this topic, the breeding committee has come to the conclusion that the inbreedings 2-4, respectively 4-2 and 2-5 or 5-2 are not closer than 3-3 and are therefore permitted. The inbreedings 3-2, 2-2, 1-1- 1-2, 1-3, 1-4, 1-5 and vice versa are still not permitted. The determinations for the breeding rules have been modified regarding this topic.

What does „inbreeding“ mean? Inbreeding is the pairing of related animals. It is used as breeding method in order to consolidate certain characteristics or performance features of a breed. Thereby, the „good“ as well as the „bad“ characteristics can be consolidated. Good characteristics are the desired breeding goals (characteristics), bad characteristics are the feared “defects”, such as for example loss of performance or hereditary diseases. That is why inbreeding has been discussed controversially for years.

How are breeders qualified? The breeders are coached by the breeding wardens of their local groups. The main club offers seminars for breeders and those interested in breeding. Additionally, regular breeding instruction courses are realized by the federal group’s breeding warden. The association also offers various information services via which everybody can inform themselves about health status, exhibition and trial results of the individual breeding animals.

Who controls inbreeding and planned inbreeding? The adherence to the rules on inbreeding is controlled by the Pedigree Office of the German Shepherd Association SV. This disposes of molecularbiological samples which clearly identify every dog, so that inbreeding can be eliminated and thereby dogs that are related too closely do not receive an entry in the SV studbook.

What are the goals in the breeding of German Shepherds? Breeding means not only to „proliferate“, but to improve. The goal is to breed a healthy German Shepherd willing to work and corresponding to the standard in order to maintain and improve the breed’s characteristics.

When do scientists refer to inbreeding? Inbreeding is the tightest inbreeding of parent animals with their descents or of sibling animals.
