Attention – NEW EU RULES FOR TRAVELING WITH PETS
Starting April 22, 2026, new rules for traveling with pets will apply in the EU:
You may no longer travel with more than five dogs in the same vehicle. Exceptions apply, for example, if you are participating in competitions or using public transportation.
The aim of the regulation is to prevent the cross-border illegal trade in pets. For most travelers, little will change: a pet passport, rabies vaccination, and microchip will still be required.
For those traveling with more than five animals in the same vehicle, the following rules apply, or the following conditions must be met:
1. The animals are being transported for the purpose of participating in competitions, exhibitions, or sporting events, or for training for such events.
2. Written documentation is available confirming that the animals are either registered to participate in such an event or are registered with an association that organizes such events.
3. All animals are over six months old.
4. If the animals do not meet these conditions, they must meet the requirements for commercial import. All three conditions must be met simultaneously.
These requirements are based on EU animal health law, in particular Regulation (EU) 2016/429 (“Animal Health Law”). The previous regulation has not been repealed in substance, but rather incorporated into.
